Operation Fruit Rescue Edmonton is doing good things around town. The group, which started in 2009, has rescued countless pounds of fruit over the past five years. But there is so much more that could be saved – they need your help!
I profiled OFRE for Vue this week, after stopping by the launch of their micro-orchard last weekend at McCauley School. I was pretty impressed with the plans they have for that space, and for the sheer dedication of the volunteers as well as the president, Mike Johnson.
So much fruit in Edmonton is wasted each year because it’s simply not harvested, and OFRE can only make a dent in that with the volunteer force they currently have. Hopefully the micro-orchard will help them continue to expand their presence in the city. Watch for their education seminars next summer, which they are hoping to do on a biweekly basis at McCauley.
I’m not really going to get into it any further as my Vue piece is pretty detailed, so head on over there to read more about OFRE.
