I recently wrote an article analyzing Mark Carney’s natal chart and the current transits affecting him in the lead-up to the Canadian federal election on April 28, 2025. In that article, I used an early Gemini rising. His birth time was unknown, so I used astrology dice to divine a rising for him and got the first decan of Gemini.
But it turns out that we do have an exact birth time for Carney! This was released by a northern Canadian media company, Cabin Radio, less than two weeks ago.
Many thanks to my reader Heath for sharing this link with me – I’m so grateful for your help!
You’ll see the article contains an image from The Norther newspaper on March 16, 1965, the same day that Carney was born at 7:56am.
Side note: the astrology dice were so close! Only one decan off.
It’s really interesting that the birth announcement was done on the same day Carney was born – no small feat for a small-town newspaper in the Northwest Territories in the mid-1960s.
The Norther was a short-lived, very small publication so we’ll have to trust that Cabin Radio did their due diligence in confirming this source. It looks legit to me and I’m pretty confident trusting this as a source for Carney’s birth time.
So, let’s look at Carney’s confirmed natal chart. Here it is:

The first thing that jumped out at me is that Carney’s Ascendant at 25 Taurus is exactly conjunct the fixed star Algol. I’ve included Algol in the chart for reference: it’s marked with an asterisk *.
Ancient astrologers considered Algol the most malefic of all the fixed stars. All the ancient writings describe it in overwhelmingly negative terms.
In Brady’s Book of Fixed Stars, astrologer Bernadette Brady describes Algol as follows:
“It was said to cause hangings, death by the loss of one’s head, and any other foul, demonic deed that could befall the human race. Algol was called Ras al-Ghul by the Arabs, which means the Head of the Demon, and they considered this female demon to be the wife of the devil. Ptolemy labeled the star as ‘the brightest one of those in the Gorgon’s head.’ The Chinese called the star Tseih She, meaning Piled Up Corpses.”
So, the traditional associations with Algol are, uh, not great.
However, keep in mind that ancient astrologers tended to go hard with extreme astrological delineations. When things were bad, they were SO BAD. In twenty-first century Canada, things are rarely that extreme (thank god).
Brady provides a modern definition of Algol as representing “a strong consuming passion that may devour you with anger and rage. If one can contain an unconscious compulsion to take revenge, and focus that passion into a more productive outcome, Algol is one of the most powerful stars in the sky.”
This is far more instructive for Carney’s chart, because it also echoes his main aspect: the extremely tight conjunction of Uranus-Moon-Pluto-Mars in Virgo, opposed by Saturn, Venus and Sun in Pisces. More on this below.
I think we are seeing this impulse play out quite strongly in Carney’s reaction to Donald Trump’s tariff threats (now reality) and suggestions about making Canada the 51st state. Carney seems all too eager to exacerbate an already tense situation by declaring that Canada’s old relationship with the US is over. However, he did have a conversation with Trump the day after that statement, so this is likely a bunch of political bluster and campaign posturing. Still, it’s alarming to know that Carney’s Ascendant is underpinned by Algol and therefore likely to spur him into unconscious compulsions.
A mitigating aspect on Carney’s Ascendant-Algol is Jupiter, which is also conjunct Carney’s Ascendant. Jupiter is his sect light (i.e. the luminary of sect because he has a day chart). This strengthens Jupiter’s role even more and suggests that this area of his chart will be the luckiest/most positive place for Carney.
To wit: it’s Carney himself who has served him best through life.
Jupiter also rules his eleventh house stellium and his eighth house. Together, this supports the profile of someone who achieves success through other people’s money (eighth house) combined with broad groups of people/communities (eleventh house). This manifested very literally for Carney through his roles as governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank England, not to mention all the other impressive titles that fill out his resume.

Now that we have a confirmed birth time for Carney, we can use all sorts of timing techniques to hone astrological predictions for him.
Let’s start with annual profections. Carney turned 60 just two days after he was sworn in as Prime Minister. That puts him in a first house year, which is Taurus. His annual timelord is Venus.
Being in a first house year is certainly appropriate for someone who just became Prime Minister.
Carney was living in England for the past several years and showed back up in Canada suddenly, taking centre stage as the person favoured to replace Justin Trudeau after Trudeau announced his intention to resign on January 6. Talk about moving from twelfth house obscurity and to the limelight of the first house.
Being in a first house year helps Carney’s election chances too. Taurus is ruled by Venus, which is exalted in Pisces in his natal chart. Venus shares Pisces with the Sun and Saturn. The Sun speaks to prominence and is near the top of his chart; in a very straightforward way this suggests someone of prominence and his career has certainly shown that.
Saturn’s presence in his eleventh gives stability, persistence and responsibility. It’s also a restrictive influence over Venus. Plus, there’s all those opposing planets in Virgo blocking Venus’s usual boons, so it’s not like this year will be completely positive and rosy for him.
I also checked Carney’s solar arcs. Here’s a biwheel showing his solar arcs on the outer ring (set for election day) with his natal on the inner ring:

You can see that the Sun has arced almost exactly to Carney’s Ascendant degree – that will be exact within the next year. This certainly brings prominence and solar honours. Arguably, this has already manifested with him becoming Prime Minister. If he fails to win the election, you can bet he’ll show up in some other prominent position within the next year – which would fit the exact arc of the Sun to his Ascendant.
His current timelord, Venus, is also in his current profected house, which is also a sign that Venus rules. She’s close to his natal Jupiter. All of this is extremely positive and supports him having a fortunate year.
Saturn is in the first too, however, so that brings in some restriction. And of course there’s always that opposing stellium of Uranus-Moon-Pluto-Mars which will forever hamper the efforts of his Venus and Sun. By solar arc, that stellium is in his seventh house which represents partners and open enemies. We are seeing that play out quite literally with the election. He’s got political opponents as well as Donald Trump openly defying him.
Finally, I noted that Carney’s IC degree has arced to almost the same degree as his Moon-Pluto conjunction, while his MC has arced close to his natal Saturn. This suggests restrictions over his career as well as challenges in his personal life, home, family and foundation. It might also relate to his children – more on that below.
I also looked at another timing technique, secondary progressions. (Why not throw the kitchen sink at this, since we have a confirmed time now, right?!)
Here’s a biwheel showing Carney’s secondary progressions on the outer wheel, for the date that Carney was sworn in as Prime Minister:

Carney is in a progressed Full Moon phase. This was exact in late January, right as Carney had returned to Canada and began campaigning to replace Trudeau as the head of the Liberal Party. During progressed Full Moon periods we shine at full capacity. We bask in our accomplishments and see projects come to fruition. That’s all extremely literal for Carney.
As well, this progressed Full Moon was exactly conjunct his natal AC-IC on the date he became Prime Minister – so again, a very literal manifestation of the astrology.
The last timing technique I’ll consider, other than the transits of course, is the current eclipse cycle. Carney’s rise to the Prime Minister’s office is a classic eclipse story, as I described in my previous post on him.
The lunar eclipse on March 14, 2025 was at 23 Virgo, close to Carney’s Uranus-Moon-Pluto-Mars. We now know that Virgo is his fifth house of children, creativity, pleasure and good fortune. Having the eclipses here can bring challenges in these areas. As a fellow Taurus rising, I’ve found myself re-evaluating what I do for fun and finding challenges in these areas – things that were supposed to be pleasurable had become work, and I had come to resent them.
I wonder what Carney’s relationship to pleasure is. His chart makes me think he sees creative outlets as useless, or something that must serve a higher purpose – a means to an end of accomplishing his lofty ambitions.
All those planets in Virgo also reveal Carney as someone with a lot of challenges around emotions and emotional processing.
His Moon is in very rough shape. Carney’s Moon is exactly conjunct Pluto, very close to Uranus, and besieged by Mars and Saturn. That is a rough, volatile configuration. I’ve encountered a few reports of Carney’s “explosive” and “volcanic” temper. With a Moon like that, I bet he does have anger issues.
This configuration echoes his Algol-Ascendant conjunction. Remember that Algol can represent “a strong consuming passion that may devour you with anger and rage.” Carney must work to keep his anger in check in order to achieve his intense ambitions.
He has support in this from Saturn in Pisces, which opposes this volatile stellium in Virgo. Saturn acts as a dampening switch and is what allows him to keep, or at least regain, control of his emotions when they get out of check.
Still, with the eclipse churning up this area of his chart, Carney is likely finding it difficult to keep a cool head.
The fifth house is also associated with children, so an eclipse here can bring developments related to children. There was an incident in recent days concerning one of Carney’s children, Sasha, who is non-binary. There was some online attention and attacks around this, and while it didn’t get any mainstream traction (that I saw), it certainly must have rankled him. Hopefully we won’t hear any more about this, but that’s not a guarantee.

The upcoming solar eclipse on March 29, 2025 is at 9 Aries, only 4 degrees from Carney’s Mercury. As I noted in my other article, Mercury is an important planet for Carney given that it rules all those planets in Virgo and is in mutual reception with his Mars in Pisces.
Thanks to having an exact birth time, we now know that Mercury is in his twelfth house. This makes it more of a hidden influence. It seems very much like a “power behind the throne” type of vibe. I think that fits with him being the head of the Bank of England and Bank of Canada – that’s a very prominent position, sure, but it’s also not usually someone that gets a lot of press time.
It’s also a potential indication of hidden enemies, a common twelfth-house signification. Carney has plenty of open enemies and opponents, but eclipses tend to dredge things up that were previously hidden. I’m wondering if we’ll get some revelations after the eclipse tomorrow that show Carney in a new light.
This could also tie into his volatile temper. Mars in Virgo is exacting and highly self-critical; Mercury in Aries is rash and blurts out things without thinking them over first. An Aries Mercury in the twelfth house carries the risk of rashly uttered words that become one’s undoing. Carney will need to guard his tongue very well over the election trail to avoid this.
Carney was sworn in as PM on the day that Mercury stationed retrograde at 9 Aries – the same degree as the solar eclipse tomorrow. On election day, Carney will be having an exact Mercury return, with Mercury at 14 Aries. This means that Canadians will be evaluating Carney on his Mercury, and by extension, his Mars – on his words and his actions that occurred during the eclipse period. Given that this is in his twelfth, I’m tempted to say that his words and actions may be his undoing.
Let’s take a look at one more chart – a biwheel showing Carney’s natal chart against election day:

Carney has had Uranus near his Ascendant for years. I noted in my previous article that Uranus is, in the words of astrologer Joan Quigley, “a kingmaker and throne-toppler.” We’ve seen the first part of that adage come true. Perhaps the second part will occur on election day.
Election day has a New Moon in Taurus (the exact lunation is the day earlier at 7 Taurus) – Carney’s profected sign. This could work both ways. It could signify him embarking on the new path as leader of Canada. (Elected by the people, this time.) Or, it could be the opposite: a new path to take after losing the election.
The Moon will cross Carney’s Ascendant on election day and apply to a conjunction with Uranus, which will be exact in the early evening as the results start coming in. This signifies the people of Canada making a sudden, shocking decision.
Saturn is also closely conjunct Venus, his annual timelord, on election day; they are both within a couple degrees of his Sun. Having Venus on his Sun would normally be very fortunate, but having Saturn there too suggests restriction and oppression.
Then there’s the Mercury issue. As I previously noted, Carney will have an exact Mercury return on election day. Remember that he was sworn in as Prime Minister on the date that Mercury stationed retrograde. This is in his twelfth house, too – the place of self-undoing, hidden enemies and isolation. When he was sworn in, on the day of Mercury’s station and a lunar eclipse, I wondered if he was going to be a long-reigning eclipse leader or a short-lived Mercury Rx leader. I think I’m leaning to the latter.

Overall, Mark Carney has a powerful natal chart. This comes as no surprise given his career and rise to the highest office of the country. He has a lot of natural strength and support that could carry him through to a win on April 28.
But we are also in a period of peak instability and change. With Uranus on Carney’s Ascendant, the eclipses impacting the most critical part of his chart, and the other complicating factors I’ve noted, victory is not assured.
It’s so frustrating not to have an exact birth time for Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s Conservative Party and Carney’s main rival. We are almost certain never to get one either, because Poilievre was born to a 16-year-old who placed him for adoption immediately. To be thorough, I checked the Calgary Herald newspaper for birth announcements in the couple of days after Pierre’s birth, but unsurprisingly there was nothing.
Next up is a deep dive into Pierre Poilievre’s chart. I may try to do some rectification on him, but either way I need to spend some time studying his chart before I can feel comfortable in calling any winners or losers.
Regardless of what happens on April 28, Carney is likely to have a fairly good year. Indeed, perhaps not winning would be more favourable for him. He would then be free to go off and take some other prominent position, undoubtedly higher paying than the PM’s seat, and with far less aggravations.
